Jerry Stephen Manes passed away at 6:43 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at St. John’s Regional Hospital, Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 2 days.
Jerry was born November 18, 1933, in Richland, Missouri. He was one of 4 children born to the union of the late Fred Burke and Maude (Hillhouse) Manes.
Jerry grew up in Richland and was a 1951 graduate of Richland High School. He was very active in school, playing on the basketball and baseball teams. Jerry later played professional baseball for a New York Giant franchise.
On October 9, 1957, in Hernando, Mississippi, Jerry was united in marriage with Jewell Tyler. Jerry and Jewell shared nearly 54 years of marriage and six daughters: Rita, Lizabeth, Jerra Julia, Margaret and Sarah.
Jerry was a proud professional Tennessee Walking Horse trainer for 53 years. He also raised turkeys for several years. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially quail hunting and fishing.
As a young boy, Jerry accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior and was baptized. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richland, where he was a Sunday School teacher. Jerry was a past Worshipful Master for the Richland Masonic Lodge #385 AF & AM, a past president of the Stoutland School Board, a little league coach, a master horse show judge, a member of HAWHA, SWHA, a charter member of WHTA, and a charter member and past president of MWHTA.
Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife: Jewell; six children: Rita Schubel (Gene), Louisburg, KS, Lizabeth Carlson (Terry), Cleveland, MS, Jerra Ann Williams (Larry), Lee’s Summit, Julia van Zyverden (Nelson), Niangua, Margaret Hickman (Wade), Stoutland and Sarah Manes, Cummings, GA; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters
A memorial gathering of family and friends was held between 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., Friday, July 23, 2010 in the Memorial Chapel of Richland, Richland, Missouri.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Jerry Manes to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapel of Richland.
